Fourteen Ways of Looking at a Cockroach

I
On top of my Metamorphosis.
The only moving thing.
I swear it happens.

II
I saw one, then two. No.
It is three.
Ten must be hiding.

III
The cockroach twirled in the auburn rinds.
It then crept up on my Ballantine's.

IV
One can and a pecan.
Air gun.
One can and a pecan and a cockroach.
Air gun.

V
I know not which to prefer:
My toxic insecticide,
Or my secret aborticide—
The cockroach is bristling.

VI
Larva killed in the window stile
With hysteric class.
The woe of the cockroach.
Display of blue: it glows.
The brooding
Paced by shallow
But crystalline bordeaux.

VII
O kill ten please Maryam!
Why should we not embolden blaze?
Do you not agree that the cockroach
Hawks drowned, aloft wheat
To humans around it?

VIII
I know of ignoble descents
And of lurid necessary mayhem;
The thick, black loop
That the cockroach invokes
In, at—it flows.

IX
Then the cockroach grew; spouts upright.
It stained the wedge.
Tough once, now fickle.

X
At the sight of cockroaches
Frying in a preen pan
Tears out of abhorrence
Resounded sharply.

XI
The path to their nest
I passed. Twice.
Plagued by fear,
I overlooked
A hollow entourage
Of cockroaches.

XII
It quivers; it's crawling.
The cockroach must be expiring.

XIII
Males are short; females long.
I am acquiring
Entomological expertise
That I do not need.

XIV
All evening tried to annihilate it.
Insecticide I swallowed.
The cockroach mocked.
Dead now I am.
I see it still, I swear.

"This image of the past behavior is not, however, a representation of what is past. Rather, it is the requisite completion of the memory image to get the meaning of the whole. It can have the character of doubt, conjecture, or possibility, but never the character of being."

Virtual Dialogue

R: Has your awareness over writing as an act ever prevented you from writing?

E: but of course. all the time. constantly. always.

(right now)

§

The green light came and for a minute—just one minute—, I could not drive anymore.

*

I have done the same with writing. I have made it conscious. Should I wish I had not? At the moment, I cannot do it anymore. To write as an act, to write as the act. I need a remedy. I feel sick.

*

Am I making the slightest sense?

E: of course you make sense.
