Colin White

Colin White

"Do I dare / Disturb the universe?"
And he paused——as though giving us time
to comprehend the dimension of the convention.

And he went on, "In a minute there is time
For decisions and revisions which a minute will reverse."

But this minute has congealed.

And I think of him.
And I think of you.
And I think of them.

And it aches. And I break.
Into tears. Into pieces. Into madness.

Him who sings has set sail for
the world's most outer shores.
And yet again I am an orphan.
........................As we are all.

So drunk with loss.
But then an echo comes,
"Think, think, think!"

And my rigid head freezes into excision.
For a minute. For two minutes. Maybe three.
And I painfully stop counting
To recall his loud-wise-sea-preserved voice.

And that is what I will do. Recall.
It is all that I have left. Recall.

Till other human voices wake me and I drown.

“Is not the ability of ethnicity to present (or invent) itself as a 'natural' and timeless category the problem to be tackled? Are not ethnic groups part of the historical process, tied to the history of modern nationalism? Though they may pretend to be eternal and essential, are they not of rather recent origin and eminently pliable and unstable? Is not modernism an important source of ethnicity? Do not new ethnic groups continually emerge? Even where they exist over long time spans, do not ethnic groups constantly change and redefine themselves? What is the active contribution literature makes, as a productive force, to the emergence and maintenance of communities by reverberation and of ethnic distinctions? Are not the formulas of 'originality' and 'authenticity' in ethnic discourse a palpable legacy of European romanticism? How is the illusion of ethnic 'authenticity' stylistically created in a text? Despite all the diatribes, is not the opposition between 'pluralism' and "assimilation" a false one? Does not any 'ethnic' system rely on an opposition to something 'non-ethnic,' and is not this very antithesis more important than the interchangeable content (of flags, anthems, and the applicable vernacular)?”

". . . it's just as I feared, my invented island is really taking its place in world geography. Why, this island sounds very much like the old Dahlberg place on Jackfish Island up on Rainy Lake, people say, and I wonder: can it be happening? Someone tells me: I understand somebody bought the place recently and plans to fix it up, maybe put a resort there or something. On my island? Extraordinary! -- and yet it seems possible. I look on a map: yes, there's Rainy Lake, there's Jackfish Island. Who invented this map? Well, I must have, surely. And the Dahlbergs, too, of course, and the people who told me about them. Yes, and perhaps tomorrow I will invent Chicago and Jesus Christ and the history of the moon. Just as I have invented you, dear reader, while lying here in the afternoon sun, bedded deeply in the bluegreen grass like an old iron poker . . ."

Went to a restaurant. Parked right in front. Went inside. Sat down. Ordered. Smoked. Ate food. Guy arrived in motorcycle. Guy parked right next to my car. Guy got off his cycle. Guy walked towards my car. Guy sat on top of the trunk. Activated the alarm to scare him off. Guy did not even blink. Sighed. Finished eating my food. Paid the check. Stood up. Went outside. Walked towards Guy's motorcycle. Sat in the seat.

Guy said, "Hey! That's my bike!" I said, "Oh, I am sorry. You have been sitting on top of my trunk for half an hour so I assumed we were among friends. Since that is not the case then, "Hey! That's my car!"
